I’ve said a few times that Rick North is one of my heroes. I phone-banked for him for a couple of months when he was working on getting growth hormones out of our Oregon milk. He is the one responsible for the now nationwide rejection of growth hormones in dairy cows. His current project is the fluoride issue, and in October he sent me this. I rushed through my mail without posting it at the time, and have found it now, so here it is!
Everyone – In the past week, I’ve become aware of two videos, about five minutes apiece, that are really well done.
The first, suggested by Jay on this list (thank you Jay!), features one of my favorite scientists and authors, David Suzuki. A Canadian geneticist, he’s been one of the leading activists addressing the problems of GMO’s in lay-friendly terms. The video’s at www.bing.com/videos
The second, “Drinking Fluoride: Is it Safe?,” has just been released by Moms Against Fluoridation and features leading scientist Kathleen Thiessen and physician Angela Hind. It’s taken from a 20-minute video available at the Moms website by award-winning film-maker Jeremy Seifert and is at www.youtube.com
Backtracking to find more from Rick:
Everyone – It’s been a long time since I sent a newsletter. I’ve been pretty much consumed by on-the-ground activism and haven’t had much time for writing about it.
However, this came across my e-mail and I wanted to share it with you. Many of you were aware of our previous nationwide efforts, through Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, to end the use of rBGH (rBST), the bovine growth hormone injected into cows to force them to produce more milk – at a very high price to their own health while increasing health risks to people.
This I just heard from FeedStuffs, an ag news outlet: www.feedstuffs.com
“Elanco is exploring strategic options for recombinant bovine somatatropin (rbST), including seeking a buyer for the molecule and its Augusta, Ga., manufacturing facility . . . “rbST is an important innovation for dairy farmers around the world, bringing substantial benefits to dairy farmers, consumers and the environment for nearly 25 years. As we move forward, we are seeking to shift to new areas of innovation to bring greater future value to the industry.”
My take on this, which admittedly includes a healthy dose of wishful thinking, is that Elanco:
1)Is making little or no money on rBGH
2)Doesn’t see a future for it, as more and more dairies, especially cheese makers, dump it
3)Wants to get rid of it, much like Monsanto did when it sold it to Elanco
Of course, it’s entirely possible that they already have another company to buy it that will be just as aggressive in peddling it or another will appear. Let’s hope not.
I also expect to have another announcement in the near future.
Everyone – A VERY strong study linking higher fluoride urine levels in pregnant women with lower IQ’s in their children was recently published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a top-notch medical journal.
I’ve written an op-ed for the Lund Report again calling for an end to water fluoridation. It’s now on-line at www.thelundreport.org
