You are absolutely on track. Processed foods will never deliver the complete, usable nutrition that we need for a healthy life. We are what we eat. We are organic beings- hmmm...what should we eat?
I can't think of a more devastating way that we have let our children down, hence our Nation, in ever increasing numbers from generation to generation, than by our giving in to the convenience of modern processed food - food far removed from its raw, most nourishing state. One of the most important political stands we can make today is to empower our educational system to teach our children, from pre-school forward, as part of the daily curriculum, about the vital relationship between what we eat and our physical, mental, and spiritual well being. When this happens we should not be surprised to see dramatic changes in attention spans, test scores, and overall performance across the board.
I have hope that our new school garden program can become a starting point for just such a change here in Florence. Randy

The electricity failed at 5:30 so I'm wondering if the board meeting was held on Jan. 24th? If it didn't happen, when and where will the next one be held?

Thanks.

We will also be discussing the creation of new Workgroups (formerly known as Committees) necessary for sustaining, improving, and growing our Co-op. Are you ready to pitch in and help the Co-op succeed?

I have very much supported and kept abreast of the Co-op's development
over the years. We seem to be at an important juncture that requires
increased efforts to keep the Co-op as a part of our community.

I am very willing to actively participate in this evolutionary process for
the Co-op and so .....
I would like to put my name in the hat for a Board of Directors seat. I
would like to work together to develop a clearer vision for all and a
business plan for the sustainability and security of having high quality
organic and local foods available.

Thanks for all you do.
Regards,
Cynthia Chandler

I don't think the Co-op can continue to operate as if it is functioning in our former economic climate. We are not an old established Co-op that has faithful members over a long period of time, as in the Baker City model the Board used for their discount system. It is a mistake to base our decisions on what other Co-ops are doing...especially those that have a much larger customer base than ours.

And perhaps paid staff should log volunteer hours for their discounts just as the members do. For instance, the paid Volunteer Co-ordinator could log volunteer hours to call members to help fill in hours that have not been filled for the month. Or the paid cashiers could split the responsibility, while the store is slow.

We can't assume that people don't care. The median age in Florence is 55 or 60. Many people have other volunteer responsibilities, or travel or health difficulties, and may not volunteer immediately unless asked. Calling people further expands our communication with our members and draws them in.

How much more in employee wages does it take to keep the co-op open between 10 and 12pm, 6 days a week? We added these extra hours this year. I noted in an earlier comment that the difference in employee wages between last year and this is $6678.00. We are $5000.00 in the red. There may be a connection.
